The thrilling sequel to Small Blue Thing. Alex owes Callum her life. He risked everything to keep her alive, but the price he is paying is a high one. His half-life as a ghostly Dirge is bleak, and gathering the fresh memories he needs to exist keeps him away from Alex when she misses him most. Alex has to find a way that they can be together. Review
The blurb is right, this is a thrilling sequel and to continue my food analogy from my previous review, this as the main course is sumptuous. I sat down with the intention of leisurely reading this book over a few days but this did not happen. From the first paragraph I was completely hooked and I did not put the book down until I had finished the last page.
The story is even more compelling than the first installment; it is well written with great insight into the minds and actions of teenagers. Alex is a protagonist who all girls in their mid teens can relate to, well maybe not ‘the mean girls’. Her brother plays a bigger part in Alex’s life and you see the depth of their relationship develop, I would like him as my sibling. Her best friend Grace is steadfast even when her belief in Alex is tested to the extreme and Callum is every girl’s dream man in more ways than one. I think that it’s perfect that in this story the love between Alex and Callum is enduring, there isn’t a third party to rock the boat, very refreshing. The story is set in present day and takes place in and around London. The author has brought this area of England to life with just the right amount of description to make it interesting to read about.
I am a bit finicky and even the smallest mistake in a storyline jumps out at me and there was one in this book. On page 130, Alex says”…There was no sign of her…” then on page 132 “…she told me just now…” referring to the same incident and person whom she just claimed to not have seen. Even so this did not take anything away from the excitement of the story.
Although the book does not have a brief description of the previous novel at the beginning, the author does impart the necessary knowledge for you to understand the characters and for the story to make perfect sense, you could therefore read this book and thoroughly enjoy it without having read the prequel.
To try and describe the storyline in any more detail than the blurb, would be to give too much away and I am not going to spoil the anticipation for anyone else.
I would strongly recommend this book and its prequel. They are easy to read and fast paced with a really original idea.
The first book, the starter, really wetted my appetite and after this brilliant main-course I cannot wait for the desert, Scattering Like Light, the third in the series published 12th January 2012.
Star Rating:
I give this book 5 out of 5.
