Small Blue Things

Small Blue Things.
Author: S. C. Ransom

Retail Price: £6.99
Publisher: Nosy Crow Ltd
UK Publication Date: 13th January 2011

Synopsis/Blurb
Alex doesn’t know who to believe, Callum or Catherine.
One of them truly cares for her.
One of them wants to prey on her memories.
Both of them drowned.

After her school exams, Alex finds an extraordinary bracelet set with a mysterious blue stone buried in the Thames mud. She discovers that she can use it to communicate with the river’s dead.
Condemned to a half-life of misery, they must steal the happiness of the living to exist. Callum – desperate, lonely and breathtakingly good-loolking – is one of them. Alex falls deeply in love.
And Callum loves her: Doesn’t he?

Review
The blurb was just informative enough, wetting the appetite for the delicious story within the pages of this book. The characters really came alive and there was just enough description for the written word to paint pictures in my mind.

Alex is a typical seventeen year old with all the ups and downs this age brings, and Callum, well what can one say? He is the perfect dream boy. The other characters in the book are equally as well rounded and can be found in most people’s lives; the brother, who you love to hate but is always there for you, the best friend who you can usually share every secret with, the protective parents and the girl who thinks she is better than you.

When Catherine throws a spanner in the works you wonder why Alex believes her, but after the Rob incident who can really blame her. She has the same insecurities most of us suffer from. This might not mean much now, but if you read the book, you’ll see what I mean.

My only small moan would be the discrepancy on page on 123 (read the book and see if you can spot it), other than that, this is a page-turner.

I enjoy books that step away from the humdrum of ordinary life, I like escapism but this book blended the ordinary with the extraordinary, bringing the story alive from the very first page. I am really looking forward to reading the next book, ‘Perfectly Reflected’.

Star Rating:
I give this book 4 out of 5.
