With increasing choices into the world of work MigMag have been investigating Deloitte and their entry to work schemes – BrightStart and Graduate. We have spoken to 2 people from the company; a graduate entry and a school leaver entry. They gave us a comprehensive insight into the schemes, application process and where their choices may take them.

We were  also introduced to a world where being a School Leaver is not necessarily at a monetary disadvantage from that of a Graduate.  As professional or higher apprenticeships are on the increase we provide you with details for you to make informed choices about your future.

Ben joined Deloitte with the BrightStart Scheme route into the cut-throat world of Business and Finance.

SG: How did you hear about the scheme?
BN: After finishing my A levels I researched into alternative routes instead of University. Initially I looked at some schemes that banks offered and then began looking at accountancy firms.

SG: In spite of the greedy rap that Banks have suffered from the media, banking is still an attractive option (perhaps because of it’s potential earnings); however the perception of accountancy is still seen as grey, ‘boring’, got to be good with numbers. So what made you choose accountancy?
BN: Firstly, I would like to say accountancy is far from boring,  in fact it gives you a broad range of business knowledge and if in the future I would like to work for myself or a big company the overview helps in the fundamentals of business.

Paul the Engineering graduate tells us why he chose Deloitte and Business Consultancy as his career path.

SG: Hi, Paul could we start with how your career with Deloitte began?
PB: I came through the Summer Vacation Scheme; whilst at University Deloitte approached our University and asked to take some Engineering Students out to dinner…..

SG: Just checking you did an Engineering degree, and which University?
PB: Yes an MSc (4 year course) in Mechanical Engineering at Southampton.

SG:  Sorry, carry on….
PB: They took us out to dinner, told us about the internship and I spoke to the people who took us out about what they were looking for and if I was eligible to apply; they were positive I applied and got on to the internship programme and did two months between my 3rd and 4th year. After which I had a partner interview (always done at the end of the internship programme) and after my last year at University I returned under the Analyst Programme.

MOVING IN DAY

Moving in day!!  Packed. Ready. Spent one last night with your best friends, your loved ones. Then freedom! Or prison. I fear mine is closer to the latter. Oh curse the reviews I’ve read on my new home. I believe last year’s occupier described it as, ‘grimy’ ‘cell like’ ‘damp’ and best of all ‘expensive’. So the three hour drive to the midlands feels like an eternity. Goodbye, Essex. I thought sadly as I passed yet another ‘Welcome to…Please drive carefully’ sign.
